A construction industry group is looking to improve recruiting in underrepresented groups.
BuildForce Canada, which tracks labour market information, estimates 8700 workers in our province will leave the construction industry in the next decade.
Duncan Williams, President and CEO of the Construction Association of Nova Scotia, says they’re looking to groups that historically aren’t seen on construction sites to fill that gap.
“We know that bringing diversity to the workplace not only improves the quality of the projects, but it also improves the quality of the community that we’re working in.”
Williams says there are opportunities in the industry for all kinds of people.
He says he knows they must do a better job with recruitment, saying only five per cent of the construction workforce are women.
“We want to make sure that our industry’s reflective of the communities that we’re serving,” he says. “That’s important to us.”
He says the long-term outlook for the industry is good and they’re seeing significant growth out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
