RCMP in Halifax are investigating after someone threatened to expose intimate pictures of an 18-year-old man.
Police say they received a report June 22 a suspect had recorded a video chat with the man.
They say the suspect had sent a screenshot of the recording, threatened to send the recording to the man’s contacts, and demanded money.
RCMP say the man did not send money but was not exposed.
S/Sgt. Royce MacRae, of Nova Scotia RCMP Digital Forensics Services, says it may still happen.
“If you make a video or take a photo, and that device has the ability to connect to the internet, the content can potentially be seen by anyone.”
MacRae says you can protect yourself from this type of scam by ignoring friend requests from strangers and not sharing intimate content online with people you’ve never met in-person.
Police say an investigation is ongoing.
