The provincial and federal governments are spending $1.46 million to upgrade two boating clubs in Halifax.
Officials say Orenda Canoe Club, in Lake Echo, is getting $200,000 from the province and $160,000 from the feds for renovations and to enhance current programs.
Shelley Leverman-Peddle, club commodore for Orenda Canoe Club, says the money will ensure their continued success.
“We are very excited to complete the second phase of our expansion and renovation project.”
The Cheema Aquatic Club, in Waverley, will get $500,000 from the provincial government, $600,000 from the federal government, and $20,000 from Halifax Regional Municipality.
Officials say the money is for expansion and retrofit of the Frank Garner Boat House. They say it will improve accessibility and allow for more inclusive programs like para-paddling.
Nadine Lamontagne, club commodore for Cheema Aquatic Club, says it’ll allow them to grow and offer more.
“The capacity for Cheema to be a more engaged and supportive neighbour to the surrounding communities,” she says. “We are beyond thrilled about what this means for the youth of our community.”
Orenda Canoe Club is home to five Olympic champions and Cheema Aquatic Club a canoe and kayak club focused primarily on sprint canoe and kayak racing
