Many communities have cancelled traditional Canada Day events due to the pandemic, but there is also a movement across the country to use the date for reflection.
This comes after the remains of hundreds of children were found at the sites of former residential schools in British Columbia and Saskatchewan.
The Halifax Regional Municipality says it’s usual programming will not be going ahead because of public health restrictions, but it’s also encouraging residents to consider our shared history and to recommit to meaningful reconciliation efforts.
The Millbrook First Nation has taken to social media to call for solidarity and to announce it will not be holding any celebrations due to investigations being conducted on former residential school grounds.
Work is underway to scan the former residential school site in Shubenacadie to determine if there are any unmarked graves there.
The ground search is being led by the Sipekne’katik First Nation.
