A heroes welcome for a 12-year-old Indigenous boy who finished his trek across the province Tuesday night to raise awareness about residential schools.
Landyn Toney’s Journey of Awareness began near Truro on Canada Day.
He had hundreds of supporters along the way and made it home to Cambridge in the Annapolis Valley First Nation.
The walk serves as a reminder that not all children made it home from residential schools. He travelled nearly 200 kilometres in total and had support pour in from across the country.
He’s been raising funds along the way and has raised nearly $35,000.
The pre-teen along with five other members of a committee will decide where to donate the money based on recommendations from both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous groups.
The remains of more than 1,000 children have been found at the sites of former residential schools in Canada.
