Former Member of Parliament Bill Casey says he’ll be running in the next provincial election as a Liberal candidate for Cumberland North.
Casey previously served seven terms in Parliament, representing the riding of Cumberland-Colchester from 1993 to 2019.
“Often the people of Cumberland County do not feel like part of Nova Scotia and I hope to help change that if elected,” says Casey in a news release. “The toll highway is one policy that causes this sense of separation but there are other areas of cooperation needed to promote Cumberland North economic opportunities, quality of life, and unique historic sites.”
Casey says the COVID-19 restrictions have highlighted the close connection between New Brunswick and Cumberland County, Nova Scotia along with the need for more shared services between both provinces.
“I believe that my experience and connections working for Conservative, NDP, and Liberal governments will help raise local issues,” says Casey. “I look forward to using a cooperative approach to improve the economy, well being, and profile of Cumberland North. ”
The riding is currently held by MLA Elizabeth Smith-McCrossin, who intends to run as an Independent in the next election.
She was kicked out of the Tory caucus in June for her role in a blockade of the Trans-Canada Highway amid protests around COVID restrictions.
