A 12-year-old’s 195.5 km journey has now raised $44,696.
Landyn Toney’s Journey of Awareness began near Truro, on Canada Day, and ended at his home in the Annapolis Valley First Nation, on Tuesday, six days later.
Toney says the walk was to raise awareness about residential schools, serving as a reminder not all children made it home.
People soon started donating money to the cause, but Toney didn’t need it for the walk, so decided to donate it in turn.
He and four others, his mother Marsha McClellan, Annapolis Valley First Nation Councillor Nastasya Kennedy, Sipekne’katik First Nation Chief Mike Sack, and Glooscap First Nation’s Jasmine Collins, have formed a committee to decide where the money should go, based on recommendations from both Indigenous and Non-Indigenous groups.
The GoFundMe fundraiser is still open, with a new goal of $50,000.
