Halifax Regional Police Chief Dan Kinsella is defending the actions of the force during violent confrontations with protestors during the removal of temporary shelters in a Halifax park.
Dan Kinsella said the removal of what he called “illegal homeless encampments” came after months of increased complaints around them, including assaults, thefts, and indecent acts.
Kinsella repeatedly said some of the protestors were armed and organized, and officers on the scene responded as they needed to.
He said officers were kicked, punched and headbutted.
Kinsella said all the occupant of the camps were offered alternate housing options, but he can’t say how many of them took the offer.
He said they are reviewing reports of officers removing nametags.
Kinsella confirmed 24 people were arrested and face charges including assault and obstruction.
