The Nova Scotia Teachers Union is welcoming the province’s back-to-school plan.
The union has issued a statement on the plan, which was unveiled by Premier-Designate Tim Houston on Monday with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang.
Union President Paul Wozney says they support the mandatory masking requirement for students and staff, which is set to remain in place until Nova Scotia enters Phase 5 of reopening.
Classes will look pretty normal when school opens back up on September 7th.
There will be full in-class learning, music and sports, the use of cafeterias, extra-curricular activities, and non-essential visitors will be allowed.
Meantime, the target date for Phase 5 is September 15th, which would see all public health restrictions, including mandatory masking lifted.
Border restrictions would be the exception.
Wozney adds the union is also pleased with the Tory leader’s approach, saying he promised soon after the election win the release of the back-to-school plan would be a top priority.
The union will carry out further conversations with staff over the next few days to see if there are more ways the plan can be strengthened.
