The MLA of Yarmouth is reacting to Premier Tim Houston’s comments on the Nova Scotia to Maine ferry service.
Houston said yesterday that he’ll be making a phone call soon to discuss what the business plan is for the CAT, operated by Bay Ferries.
Liberal Zach Churchill says he hopes Houston gives it a chance.
“It’s important that he understands the economic figures and look at the contract. If he has suggestions on how to improve that, by all means he can make them,” says Churchill.
Churchill says he hopes the service will return in the spring, if border restrictions are loosened.
“I think he’ll come up with the right decision, to give it a chance and see if we can generate some revenue for the province post-COVID.”
Houston said yesterday he wants to make sure discussions are had to see if the CAT ferry is the right boat at the right port, on the right schedule.
He was highly critical of the previous Liberal governments handling of the ferry, saying taxpayers have not seen a return for the millions invested to operate the service.
The province has a contract with Bay Ferries until 2025, but the service has not run the last few seasons due to the pandemic and upgrades to the terminal in Bar Harbor, Maine.
