Students attending two schools in the Halifax area will get the chance to know them by their new names this year.
Doug Hadley, the spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Centre for Education, tells our newsroom Sir John A. Macdonald High School in Upper Tantallon is now called Bay View.
The school was named after Canada’s first prime minister. He’s been the source of criticism in recent years for his role in the creation of Canada’s residential school system.
First tweet under our new name!! Late Registration happens Wednesday, Aug 25th from 9-3.

Officials say the name change is about being more inclusive and welcoming. School advisory councils, students, and staff, were consulted on the name changes.
Tallahassee Community School in Eastern Passage is being renamed Horizon Elementary.
Hadley says it’s a really exciting time as the schools will forge new identities this year.
Meantime, the new JL Ilsley High School is opening to students in Spryfield.
It’s located on the same site as the former school of the same name, which closed last June.
