An investigation is underway into a murder in Truro.
The Truro Police Service providing an update on Tuesday morning on the death of 23-year-old Prabhjot Singh Katri over the weekend.
Police were called to a “suspicious death” at a two-story apartment building on Robie Street just after 2 a.m. on Sunday.
Chief Dave MacNeil says a 23-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
A release from the Red Cross says half a dozen people were put out of their homes while officers investigated.
Investigators issued several search warrants and arrested a person of interest, but they have since been released without charges.
The individual remains a person of interest in the case.
The community is calling it a hate crime, but police say they don’t have information on a motive or if it was a random attack.
MacNeil says if the investigation leads them to believe it is a motive or factor in the case, then appropriate charges would be laid.
Meantime, a GoFundMe has been set up Katri to help send his body home to India so his parents can put him to rest.
It says Katri had been living his dream life in Canada, which came to an end when he was killed while returning home from his friend’s place.
It has raised more than $65,000.
