A vigil will light up Truro this evening in honour of a young Indian man who was killed last weekend.
The Maritime Sikh Society is holding the candlelight vigil to call for justice for Prabhjot Singh Katri who was murdered at an apartment building early Sunday morning.
The 23-year-old was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries and rushed to hospital, where he later died.
The society describes him in a Facebook post as an innocent, hardworking man, who deserved to have a happy and full life. A fundraiser to return his body to his parents in India has raised more than $87,000.
The online message says the event will remain peaceful to respect the memory of Katri.
“We are all members of a large human family, a community, despite our colour, race, appearance or beliefs,” the post says. “We will be respectful and cordial to each other despite the anger, frustration, and fear that some are experiencing.”
Members are calling his death a “hate crime,” but that’s not a label Truro Police have used yet to describe the motive.
Investigators have executed several search warrants and arrested a person of interest, who has since been released without charges.
Chief David MacNeil and Truro Mayor Bill Mills met with Maritime Sikh Society President Dr. Simardeep Kaur Hundal at Katri’s family home this week. The society says they’re satisfied with the investigation so far, but they still want justice.

The march will get underway at Truro Mall at 6 p.m. on Friday. It will end at the location where the young man lost his life.
That’s where supporters can lay flowers on the stairs of the apartment building or put candles on the ground to show support for Katri and his family.
Police are expected to join the walk to show support and for security.
