18 years ago today, September 28th, 2003 Hurricane Juan hit Halifax.
I remember it was a Sunday night when the wind really started, we had the power until 11:30 in the evening and I knew when we saw Steve Murphy on TV on a Sunday night it had to be a big one!
We were living in Timberlea at the time and I remember the house shaking like it was going to lose it’s roof and seeing 2 x 4’s going up the street like toothpicks!
We were without power for most of the following week having to cook on the BBQ and read with oil lamps.
We lost a couple of trees in the backyard and my boys and the neighbourhood kids quickly made forts in them.
Going to the radio station the next day, I’ll always remember driving down Jubilee Road and a resident had tied a Sobeys bag around a downed powerline to let us drivers know it was there.
This is a picture of the eye of Hurricane Juan heading for Nova Scotia autographed by Meteorologist Peter Coade that still hangs in our home.
Hard to believe it was 18 years ago tonight!
