One of the province’s political leaders says the governing Tories’ position against any form of rent control is unacceptable.
Premier Tim Houston has repeatedly said the rent increase cap will not last beyond the provincial state of emergency, most recently after Thursday’s cabinet meeting.
NDP Leader Gary Burril said the province needs permanent rent control now.
“The continued refusal of the Conservatives to consider, or to countenance, extending to the people of Nova Scotia a protection that a majority of Canadians have today is a very unwise and ill-considered approach.”
Burril said massive post-cap rent increases, notices of which landlords have already been serving to their tenants, are going to put people out of their homes.
He said rent control is a major pillar of their plan for the fall sitting of the legislature.
