If you’re relying on the rent cap to stay in your home, you won’t be able to for much longer.
Premier Tim Houston is unequivocal: rent control will end when the state of emergency does.
Houston said he can’t offer any assurance how long that will be.
“No, I can’t,” he said. “But what I can assure people is that we feel the urgency on solutions for the housing crisis.”
Tim Houston repeated Thursday the two per cent rent increase cap is tied to the emergency order.
However, it’s set to expire in February regardless of the state of emergency.
“I have not made any decision to separate those two things,” he said. “So as long as this province is in a state of emergency, everything that goes along with that will remain in place.”
The Tories would have to make changes to the legislation to extend the cap.
