The municipality is on board with the province’s plans to address Nova Scotia’s affordable housing problem.
Halifax Regional Municipality has released a statement saying the provincial government has indicated it will adopt the recommendations from the Affordable Housing Commission.
The commission released a report in the spring offering up seventeen recommendations to the province.
They include recognizing housing as a right, reducing costs, and giving municipalities more power to help.
The city intends to partner with the province to ensure those steps are taken.
“The municipality looks forward to working with the province, private industry, residents, communities and key stakeholders like the Halifax Partnership to continue to advance
a growth strategy for the Halifax region,” the statement says.
HRM adds the new growth can be supported immediately with 56,000 residential units ready to be built.
Meantime, the Progressive Conservative government is expected to release its affordable housing plan this week.
Opposition parties called for action from Premier Tim Houston in legislature last week.
