The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs are welcoming news the controversial Alton Natural Gas Storage Project has been scrapped.
The plan was to store natural gas in caverns beneath the community of Alton and the Shubenacadie River.
Mi’kmaw opposition, protests, and regulatory delays put the project on hold since 2014.
Chief Andrea Paul, Environmental Lead for the ANSMC, thanked the demonstrators who opposed the project.
Paul said it’s a good day for the Shubenacadie River.
Officials with AltaGas, the company responsible for the project, announced Friday they will move to decommission the long-troubled project.
