The province has thrown its weight behind Halifax’s modular housing plan.
Karla MacFarlane, Minister of Community Services, announced Tuesday the provincial government is spending $2.7 million for wraparound services.
Jeff Karabanow, Dalhousie professor and expert in homelessness, said those services are the most important thing after getting people off the street.
“Those supports are integral to creating a caring environment, so that they can succeed,” he said. “They can actually get out of this homeless web.”
Karabanow said wraparound services must be tailored to the individual, including the need for social connections, support for addictions and mental health.
A release from the province said the association will offer personalized case management and focus on people who are chronically homeless, facing barriers keeping them from independent housing.
“That will work to connect them to community outings, to community dynamics,” he said. “So that people can start to become human again.”
It said the money will help 30 people with 24/7 support.
The funding, to Out of the Cold, is part of the $10.1 million to help people experiencing homelessness, first announced in October.
