Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and of the Official Opposition Erin O’Toole delivered remarks to Yarmouth, Bridgewater and Annapolis Valley Chambers of Commerce today.
O’Toole appeared virtually, and answered questions from the members after delivering his remarks.
When asked about fishing in Nova Scotia, he praised the actions of his colleagues West Nova MP Chris D’Entremont and South Shore-St. Margarets MP Rick Perkins and discussed the responsibility of government.
“If we don’t allow for seasons and other regulations to be paramount and to apply to everyone, we’re going to see this critical resource diminish,” says O’Toole. “The Liberal government did nothing for five years and that actually made expectations and the pressure even worse.”
O’Toole says he raised the fishery issue with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in their first phone call after he became leader.
Discussing Omicron, O’Toole criticized the federal government for a lack of PPE.
“The fact that we’re short many of the key ingredients, like N95 masks that were the first challenge we faced in COVID-19 two years ago almost, is inexcussable,” says O’Toole. “We’re going to continue to push on that front.”
He added that government programs introduced because of COVID-19 need to be targeted and tailored to the need.
O’Toole touched on a number of other topics including inflation, climate change and childcare.
There were also remarks from D’Entremont and Perkins at the session.
