A high school in Dartmouth will be renamed.
It’s expected Prince Andrew High School will have a new name in place for the start of the 2022-23 school year.
The school is more commonly known as P.A., but was officially named after the birth of Prince Andrew of the Royal Family in 1960.
The disgraced royal is accused of having sex with a girl when she was 17. The scandal forced him to step down from his duties.
The name of a school should be reflective of our school community and uphold our values as a safe and inclusive learning space for all. Our hope is to continue to build our identity as a positive, supportive and respectful community, with a name to match. We have heard from many of you who feel the same way. – Principal Craig Campbell
A six person School Renaming Committee has been created that includes student and staff representatives and others from the community.
“In the coming weeks, this committee will invite all community members (with or without direct affiliation to our school) to submit name suggestions,” said Campbell.
The committee will review and evaluate the submissions and will then hold a student vote.
The top three recommendations will be forwarded to the Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) for final approval.
“We’re ready and excited to take this next step. Please stay tuned for more information in the near future. We value your participation in this important process,” said Campbell.
