Another winter storm is getting ready to blast the region with a messy mix of weather.
Environment Canada is out with several weather warnings for Nova Scotia ahead of rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, and snow.
The slow-moving system is set to arrive Thursday night and persist into Saturday.
A freezing rain warning has been issued for the Halifax area as the national weather forecaster says we could see an extended period of potentially severe freezing rain.
“Periods of rain will transition to freezing rain and ice pellets early on Friday morning,” Environment Canada says. “Freezing rain will become heavy at times and continue through Friday evening into Saturday. Current guidance indicates a risk of significant ice accretion on surfaces by Saturday morning.”
The weather agency warns the ice build-up could make highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots slippery and “extremely hazardous.”
It also says there could be widespread power outages as electrical wires and tree branches could break under the weight of the ice.
Northern Nova Scotia is set to see heavy snowfall, up to 30 cm, as colder air is expected to push into that region from the north. Winter storm warnings are in place.
Meantime, rainfall warnings are out for southwestern Nova Scotia where up to 60 mm could fall
