It doesn’t shock me that there is gold here in the province. Ask anyone who works for Atlantic Gold.
I’m also well aware of The Ovens, Rawdon Gold Mines, the Uniacke Gold District and more, but did you know that there’s gold beneath our feet?
Prospecting on peninsular Halifax back in the 1800’s found quartz veins containing small amounts of gold.
Near the old Oxford Theatre a 3 inch wide vein was found at Oxford and Quinpool.
Another between Pepperell and Shirley just east of Preston street.
A 2 inch vein on a former street called Louisburg which was between Shirley and Linden streets near Camp Hill.
Gold was also found between Lockman (now Barrington) and Upper Water.
A big old 16 inch vein was found in 1897 while building a grandstand for the Provincial Exhibition Grounds between Almon, Windsor and Young streets where the Halifax Forum sits today.
I have only ever found glass in my backyard on the peninsula. Seemed to be a popular thing to bury apparently.
