The federal NDP leader hopes the inquiry into Canada’s worst mass shooting prevents further tragedies from ever happening.
It has been almost two years since a gunman disguised as a police officer killed 22 people in northern Nova Scotia.
Gabriel Wortman began the 13-hour rampage in Portapique on the night of April 18th, 2020.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Sing is out with a statement saying the public phase of the proceedings should give victims’ families and Canadians the answers they deserve.
He says many have been left in the dark since the tragedy.
“It’s crucial that this review sets the record straight. People want answers about the response times and the decision not to use emergency notifications among many other things,” Sing says. “Now that the findings of this inquiry are beginning to become public, it’s essential that we get transparency, accountability, and clear recommendations to prevent this kind of tragedy from ever happening again in Canada.”
The inquiry spent Monday detailing what happened at the beginning of the attack.
Four children whose parents were killed that night relayed critical information about the mayhem surrounding them.
They hid from the gunman and told a 911 operator the killer was disguised as a police officer and driving a mock RCMP cruiser.
The inquiry will continue to release details this week on what residents saw and what they did along with perspectives from first responders.
