Lifeguard coverage has been found for most areas of the province this summer.
There had been worries of a lifeguard shortage leading up to the season, which begins on Canada Day.
Director of the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service Paul D’Eon says they’re in pretty good shape.
“We have every area covered with full staff except for Eastern Shore, which we’re still working on. The Yarmouth area is good, we have some new faces but many of the old gang are returning,” says D’Eon.
He says the pandemic closed many pools across the province.
“A lot of the courses didn’t take place, so that cohort of 15-16 year olds that are normally going through the system didn’t have the opportunity to get training.”
D’Eon says they’re playing catch-up, and trying to get as many of that age group trained as possible.
He says 85 staff will begin training at Brigadoon Village in the Valley today through Tuesday.
Twenty-five beaches across the province will have supervision.
D’Eon says it’s always important to wear PFD’s, to keep an eye on your kids, and to remember that alcohol and water don’t mix.
