When students return to the classroom in the fall Prince Andrew High School will have a new name.
The Halifax Regional Centre for Education announced on Monday it will be called Woodlawn High School.
The school, more commonly known as P.A., was officially named after Prince Andrew of the Royal Family in 1960.
The disgraced royal is accused of having sex with a girl when she was 17. The scandal forced him to step down from his duties.
It was announced earlier this year the Dartmouth school would find a new name to better reflect the community’s values.
“The name of a school is deeply important: it sets a tone for what happens inside a building, it connects people and is part of our identity,” Principal Craig Campbell says in a statement. “A name should reflect our school community and uphold our values as a safe and inclusive learning space for all.”
A committee was struck to review submissions along with a student vote to narrow the choices down.
The top three names were Woodlawn High School, City of Lakes High School, and Ponamogoatitjg Academy.
The HRCE gave final approval to Woodlawn High. The new name will officially take effect on August 1st.
