Police believe you can help cut down on violent crime in our community.
Halifax Regional Police recently launched the Gun Violence Tip Line to directly connect you with investigators on these cases 24/7.
Cst. John MacLeod tells our newsroom no tip is too small, adding in some investigations they couldn’t crack a case without you.
“We take these shooting investigations extremely seriously,” MacLeod says. “We know, obviously, there is the potential any time a firearm is discharged in our community for someone to be injured or killed.”
Callers can leave an anonymous tip or their contact info for follow-up.

MacLeod says they wanted to find a way to connect you directly with investigators.
“We know there are people in these investigations that have information who haven’t come forward to us or, for many reasons, they may not feel comfortable,” MacLeod says. “We wanted to make sure we had as many ways as possible, and to make it as easy as possible, for anyone who has information to come forward. One piece of information that someone comes forward with might be just what’s needed to move the investigation forward.”
He adds all tips will be fully investigated. MacLeod explains it’s easier for investigators to follow up on tips when people provide their contact information. He adds investigators will get back to you. It might not be right away, but they will return your call.
“They will make sure that any information provided is followed up to the fullest,” MacLeod explains.
He could not provide details on how many calls they’ve received since May’s launch as it’s just one of their investigative tools.
But he reiterates the public can play an important role in cracking cases involving gun violence in our city.
“We greatly appreciate the public providing us with information. We certainly couldn’t do this alone,” MacLeod says. “We gather up all information that we can and we do everything we can. But certainly, with the help of the public, we can do things much faster and more efficiently. In some cases, we couldn’t do it without them.”
The most recent incident of gun violence in our community saw a 22-year-old sent to the hospital over the weekend after police reported the man was shot in the torso.
