Halifax Regional Police have issued a notice to alert Haligonians a high-risk offender is now living in the city.
Michael Gary Gilbert has completed a sentence for sexual assault, sexual exploitation, three counts of sexual interference with a person under 14, and four counts of printing or publishing child pornography.
He was also serving time for possession of child pornography, printing or distributing obscene material, and possession of a Schedule II substance.
The 51-year-old is required to follow strict conditions, according to police.
They include the following:
- No contact with a person who is under the age of 16, unless under the supervision of a person whom the court considers appropriate
- Not to engage in any activity, employment or volunteer work, that involves being in a position of trust or authority towards any person under the age of 16.
- Not to use a computer system for the purpose of communicating with any person under the age of 16
- Not to attend any public park, public swimming area, daycare center, school ground or community center where one might reasonably expect children under the age of 16 to be present.

Police remind Haligonians that the information is not intended to encourage any form of vigilante activity.
“We are sharing this information in the interest of public safety,” HRP says in a Tweet. “We understand that this is difficult news for the community.”
The public is asked to call investigators at 902-490-5020 if they believe Gilbert is violating his release conditions.
