Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons in this province – when you turn a blind eye to the passing hurricanes, increasing COVID cases and all of the extra traffic and construction.
Whether you’re new to the province or looking to explore some new-to-you locales, here are a few good places to start:
Cabot Trail
Cape Breton’s award-winning Cabot trail is renowned as one of North America’s most scenic driving routes. Whether you aim to travel the entire 5-hour route or take a few days to stop and soak in the sites, this is definitely worth the spot on your fall favourites list.
Kentville’s Pumpkin People Festival
Wander the town of Kentville surrounded by sculptures that make you feel like you’re at a headless horseman family reunion. Pumpkin statues and sculptures adorn the town for the month of October in an event that starts with a day of autumn activities. Complete with a pie-eating contest, pumpkin carving, and even a Phantom Freakshow Haunted house happening all month until Halloween.
Mahone Bay’s Scarecrow festival
Take in the haunting sights of quaint Mahone Bay populated with life-like scarecrows peppered along the front lawns of the main strip until October 9th. The festival includes a pumpkin walking path, antique fair and this year saw the first annual NS fruit Pie contest.
Shelburne County Giant Pumpkin Festival and Regatta
Every October, Nova Scotians flock to the county of Shelburne to sign up for the great pumpkin regatta – a water race where participants hollow out and sometimes even decorate giant pumpkins that can fit an adult human and race them through the Shelburne harbour
Truro Riverbreeze Fear Farm and Cornmaze
Every weekend in October, Riverbreeze farms opens their fields for a few days of fun and a few nights of terror. The corn maze features a different image every year, this year’s being a large portrait of Bob Ross with the words “Happy Little Maze” making up a portion of the maze.
Their barns turn into six terrorizing themed walk-through experiences, including circus-themed Carn-Evil and the gruesome Bloodfield Maze.
