The Halifax street bearing the name of the city’s controversial founder who issued a scalping proclamation for the lives of Mi’kmaq men, women and children will soon be officially renamed.
Regional council’s approval of the change came last year following resident surveys and task force recommendations.
As of Monday, October 30th, Cornwallis Street will be called Nora Bernard Street to honour the residential school survivor, activist and Order of Nova Scotia recipient.
The HRM says the public is invited to attend an upcoming recognition event to honour this important step towards reconciliation.
It will take place rain or shine on Monday, October 30th at 10 a.m. at the corner of North Park and Nora Bernard streets.
The occasion will be marked with a smudging ceremony, Indigenous drumming and remarks from Bernard’s family.
Did you know in 2022 Regional Council approved the renaming of Cornwallis Street to Nora Bernard Street? Residents are invited to attend an in-person event on Monday, October 30 at 10 a.m. to honour the official street renaming.
