Every year, parents everywhere are curious to know when is the most effective and reasonable time to either hand out candy or to take their own children out. Thankfully, Haligonian redditor /u/Machzy has done the due diligence for all of us and collected the data so we can all get on the same page.
In the comments on this recent post about the annual brain-bender it seems as though sentiments have remained the same since the charts most recent 2018 update even after two years of COVID-19.
One user says “I’m in the Valley, and last year we had our first kids at 6:00 and our last kids between 8:00 and 8:30. 5pm is definitely too early, as you need to give folks a chance to get home from work and get ready.”
Another states “5:00 is generally the start time. I’ll give out candy until 9 but my wife thinks anyone after 8 is ridiculous.”
And while some users (and Forman) find 9pm to be too late, others find 5pm to be way too early.
From /u/Machzy’s findings, we can conclude the following:
- 6pm to 8pm is the unspoken HRM Halloween standard hours
- 5pm is not enough time to get ready. If your tiny tots want some candy collection time, 5:30 is still extremely early but is better than 5pm
- 8pm is for the older kids, they can help themselves to what’s left.
- Anyone who trick-or-treats after 9pm is either insane (According to Forman and most users) or an absolute trooper and probably a teenager staying out of trouble (according to myself and a very small sample size of candy providers)
