A Conservative MP says Canada’s fisheries minister needs to build relationships in the industry.
Acadie-Annapolis MP Chris d’Entremont met with new minister Joanne Thompson on June 17 in Ottawa to talk about the sustainability and health of the fishing industry.
In a letter to d’Entremont, Thompson said she’s committed to sustainable management of marine resources and creating economic growth.
She also wants to modernize fisheries and protect ecosystems.
Thompson said she appreciated hearing d’Entremont’s concerns, and received an invitation to meet with stakeholders in Acadie-Annapolis.
In a post on social media, d’Entremont said it was a positive first letter, as he’s still waiting on replies from the previous minister.
He says the government needs a fresh start with the fishery, and it’s not going to be easy.
On June 11 in the House of Commons, d’Entremont called on Thompson to do what her predecessors failed to do, listen to commercial fishers and crack down on unregulated and unreported fishing before it’s too late for lobster stocks to recover.
