Halifax’s legendary Canadian curler Colleen Jones has passed away at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer.
I first met Colleen at the 1987 Jeux Canada Games in Sydney while I was just a teenager starting out at CJCB/CKPE-FM radio in Sydney. We’d all gather in the Media Lounge at the Holliday Inn on Kings Road and share stories of the day.
Fast forward to 2001 when I was doing prank calls on a Halifax radio morning show, I called Colleen up over at the CBC after one of her big curling wins with a voice disguised.
I recall it went something like: “Congrats, Colleen on your big curling win!” She replied “Thank you very much.” I then followed it up asking her “How she got her rocks off?” A good curling question. She burst out laughing and we had a few chuckles during that call.
If I can only find that “cassette tape” with that prank call on it, that’s how long ago it was.

Colleen worked at ATV/ASN before moving over to CBC where she spent 40 years.

My friend Steve Lawrence, who took the same radio and TV course with me at Memorial High in Sydney Mines, was Colleen’s camera person for many of those years at CBC following her adventures.
We’d cross paths at Halifax Mooseheads games too.
She won six Scotties Tournaments of Hearts and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2022 and inducted into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame in 2018 plus the Canada Sports of Hall of Fame in 2016.
Colleen: Please say hello to Peter Baylis for me and rest easy.
Here’s the announcement from Colleen’s social media from her son Luke:
