A 37-year-old woman and 42-year-old man, both from Eskasoni in Cape Breton, are facing charges for causing the death of a child.
On August 5, 2024, RCMP responded to a report of a child who had died suddenly at a home in Eskasoni. The incident was then referred to the Northeast Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit (NEN MCU), which took over leading the investigation.
Following a complex and nearly two-year investigation, the NEN MCU made arrests on May 20, 2026. They say the pair failed to “provide the necessities of life” with criminal negligence causing death.
Both were released on conditions by the court, and they’re scheduled to be back at Eskasoni Provincial Court on June 30.
The RCMP says multiple teams were involved in the investigation, including Forensic Identification Services, Digital Forensics Services, the Legal Applications Support Team, Eskasoni RCMP, and the Eskasoni General Investigation Section.
According to officers, no further information is being released at this time.
