Tory Leader Tim Houston promised a $500 a year grant for seniors at a stop in Halifax Wednesday.
Houston said the money can be used for household services for seniors: who are 65 or older, the property or lease is in their name, and have an annual income of $37,500 or less.
“The most common feedback from seniors is that they want to remain in their homes as long as possible,” he said. “Unfortunately, as many become more frail and unable to perform some household tasks, their ability to maintain their homes can become increasingly difficult.”
Houston said a PC government will help seniors stay in their homes.
He is campaigning in Guysborough-Tracadie and Antigonish Wednesday.
The New Democratic Party
Gary Burrill and the NDP have committed to work with their federal NDP counterparts on pharmacare and expand birth control coverage.
He hosted Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh in Halifax Wednesday.
Burrill said they would support any effort from the federal NDP for a pharmacare plan, while announcing his own $11.3 million prescription medication coverage plan.
“People across the country should be able to get the medication they need with their health card, not their credit card.”
Burrill also promised to introduce a free birth control program for anyone without private coverage and to expand provincial coverage to include HIV PrEP medication and the shingles vaccine Shingrex.
He said the NDP would spend $1 million on the insulin pump program.
The Liberals
Iain Rankin is in Cape Breton Wednesday for a pair of announcements.
The first is a commitment to expand the list of presumptive cancers for firefighters, cancers automatically considered to be a side effect of their work and therefor eligible for coverage, from six to 17.
Rankin said it recognizes women firefighters, including ovarian and cervical cancer.
“I am pleased to be able to recognize the great work and service our firefighters provide,” he said. “Hopefully, supporting them in this way will also provide comfort to their families.”
The second was a healthcare announcement at a Cape Breton hospital Wednesday afternoon.
Rankin is spending Wednesday evening in Antigonish.
