The Rolling Stones legendary drummer Charlie Watts has passed away at age 80.
A statement says: “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital earlier today surrounded by his family.”
It said he was “a cherished husband, father and grandfather” and “one of the greatest drummers of his generation”.
The Rolling Stones played the Halifax Common in 2006 on a wet and damp night.
I had just finished announcing an NHL Exhibition game at the Metro Centre around 9:45 and was walking up by Citadel Hill on Rainnie Drive and could hear “Start Me Up” playing. I thought ‘great the show is just starting…’ However it was already half way through the show.
Halifax Police let a few of us stragglers hang around on Cogswell Street and catch the rest of the concert.
I called home on my old Nokia 3220 cell phone and my wife and sons got to listen to the rock legends. Great memories!
Rest in Rock ‘n Roll Heaven peace, Charlie Watts.
