The Prime Minister has appointed his next Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard.
Justin Trudeau announced Vancouver Quadra, BC, Member of Parliament Joyce Murray will take the role, when he announced his new cabinet yesterday.
Murray previously held the role of Minister of Digital Government in Trudeau’s last cabinet. She was also, briefly, the President of the Treasury Board.
She takes over as fisheries minister from Bernadette Jordan, the former MP for South Shore-St. Margarets, who was defeated by conservative Rick Perkins in September’s federal election.
The new appointment comes as the Department of Fisheries and Oceans continues to pull lobster traps from St. Mary’s Bay marked with treaty tags by the Sipekne’katik First Nation.
Murray was first elected MP for Vancouver Quadra in 2008. She was born in South Africa and immigrated to Canada in 1961.
