A former Halifax professor accused of sexually abusing three male students in the 1970s and 80s has died.
The University of King’s College has confirmed the death of Wayne John Hankey in a statement to the school community.
King’s President and Vice-Chancellor William Lahey extended condolences to Hankey’s family.
“With this news has come some inquiry regarding the independent review process that was established by the University in February 2021,” the statement reads. “This review, which has always been separate from any criminal justice matters, will proceed.”
The 77-year-old was set to go to trial this year on criminal charges of sexual assault, indecent assault, and gross indecency.
The charges against Hankey were laid last winter. He pled not guilty and was set to go to trial this year.
The school’s president says its independent review of the allegations made by the three complainants will move forward.
