If you notice the surplus of people (or the giant ships in the harbour) on the Halifax Waterfront today, you might notice that cruise ship season has arrived! Halifax welcomed its first two cruise ships in over two years with the arrival of “The Ocean Navigator” that docked at 6 this morning, and the “Norwegian Getaway” that came in around 7 A.M. “The Ocean Navigator” has about 220 passengers and the “Norwegian Getaway” is carrying nearly 4000 passengers.
The government put a stop to cruises in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns, but they are back this year and the Port of Halifax is expecting 152 ship to dock in the Halifax Harbour this year. One ship scheduled to dock in June is going to carry around 7000 passengers.
In 2019, 179 ships docked in Halifax, and the cruise ship industry pumped about $165 million into our local economy.
