Two beaches in the Halifax region have been closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels in the water.
Papermill Lake Beach has been shut down in Bedford and Kearney Lake Beach in Halifax until further notice.
Municipal staff regularly test the water quality at all supervised municipal beaches, as well as one unsupervised beach, during the summer months.
Recent test results show the bacteria levels at these beaches have exceeded Health Canada swimming guidelines.
High bacteria levels can be caused by dogs, birds, wildlife, and hot temperatures.
Staff will continue testing and let us know when it’s safe to head back for a swim.
