The city has announced 80 ash trees will be chopped down in Bedford’s DeWolf park due to an infestation of the Emerald Ash Borer beetle.
Staff will remove the trees on Monday. The invasive beetle feeds on ash trees and is native to northeastern Asia.
“Once a tree is infested with the beetle larvae, the tree declines quickly, typically experiencing total fatality within three years,” the municipality says in a news release. “The larvae kill the tree by preventing the transportation of nutrients to and from the leaves.”
The municipality will replace the trees with ones resistant to the Emerald Ash Borer. Replanting will take place through the seasonal tree planting program.
The city says the work will take several weeks. You might notice some traffic impacts in the area.
