NASA spacecraft OSIRIS-REx returned yesterday after lifting off in 2016 towards the asteroid Bennu. The spacecraft collected samples before it set sail for its return to earth. The mission traveled 3.86 billion miles total to Bennu and back.
Recovering these samples is a key part of understanding the formation of asteroids and the effects of the elements its experienced through its journey through space.
OSIRIS-REx is an acronym for “Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer” which comes across as if they created the acronym from the name instead of the other way around. This begs the question, “What other names can be appropriately acronymized?”
