Charline McLean and Natalie Thibeau-Rector from the Miramichi Addiction, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Committee spent last Friday driving around to local businesses for Day in Yellow — a campaign that asks people to wear yellow to support suicide awareness.
With no prior notice and an element of surprise, the pair handed out bananas with smiley faces drawn on them while asking trivia questions about mental health and suicide prevention.
McLean and Thibeau-Rector handed out almost 80lbs of bananas on Friday and delightfully engaged Miramichi businesses in what is typically a difficult conversation.
The Miramichi Addiction, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Committee hosted a free community SafeTALK on Saturday to continue to conversation in the community. On top of special events like Day in Yellow and SafeTALK, the committee posts up-to-date information on their socials. McLean says awareness is done 365 days a year because it has to be.
