Last week on vacation we took in Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea fame as he held a Petty Harbour, Newfoundland kitchen party at the Shore Club in Hubbards.
Our gang from our ‘hood were there for night number two of his three-night stint at the building that’s hosted parties since 1946.
Alan brought his energy and huge personality to the show that had the crowd clapping from start to finish. Alan’s interactions included “When I say shore, you say club!” ALAN: “SHORE!” CROWD: “CLUB!!” He then quipped “I just made that up.”
He made various references through the night about his visit to Peggy’s Cove earlier in the day. Some of our friends spotted him there and got pictures.
Alan rolled through the Great Big Sea song catalog with tunes like: “Captain Kid,” “Old Black Rum,” “Consequence Free,” “When I’m Up,” “Patty Murphy” plus new music that he wrote in his basement during the pandemic like “We Don’t Wanna Go Home.”
Before “Lukey’s Boat” he said to the capacity crowd: “This dance floor can take it!” Dartmouth’s Adam Baldwin did a tune before joing in for the encore. Cover tunes included “Paper in Fire” John Mellencamp. He also had a phrase “Praise the lobster!” The Shore Club is famous for its lobster suppers.
Kendel Carson the bands fiddler wowed the crowd with her talent.
The encore featured “Ordinary Day” that had the club a bouncin’!
Believe it or not, this was his very first show at the Shore Club, let’s hope that Alan makes this a summer tradition!
