If you hate spiders, read this!
The weather is getting colder in Halifax, which means creepy crawlies like spiders are going to want to to try and make their way into your home. I’ve been watching a few Tik Toks over the weekend talking about the best methods to keep spiders out and here’s a list of what people consider to work best.
Make a spray with dish soap and essential oils
Simple fill a spray bottle with a few drops of peppermint essential oils, dish soap and water, and spray it around doorways and windows outside. You can also spray it on outdoor furniture that you don’t want spiders on.
Clean up laundry on the floor
Picking up clothing apparently helps with keeping spiders at bay, since it gives them less places to hide and scurry around. I can’t see this making a huge diference, but some people seem to think it will.
Orange peels
This will save you a bit of money on essential oils. Save old orange peels, then boil them in water. Use the resulting liquid to spray in areas that are spider infested.

Cinnamon sticks
Apparently putting cinnamon sticks all over your home will also help deter spiders.
@anna_louisa_at_home 🕷️SPIDER season is here so here’s 3 ways to keep spiders (and other insects) out of our homes!🕷️These life hacks are not only easy to do but they also make my home smell amazing! 1. Add 5-10 drops of peppermint or tea tree oil to a cup of water in a spray bottle and spray around your windows and doors to deter the insects - they dislike the smell of both of these oils! 2. Add the recommended dose of orange oil to the water for your particular mop. I use a Vileda spray mop so I added 15-20 drops - again insects dislike this scent but for us it’s not too over powering like peppermint and tea tree so it’s perfect for larger surfaces like your floors! 🍊 3. Dot cinnamon sticks around your home - spiders also dislike the smell of cinnamon so I was quick to pop one on my bedside table! You can also do this with conkers but I chose not to do this one as it would be dangerous for my toddler! At the end of the day, the best methods seem to be find a substance that spiders hate and spread that substance all over the house. Seems simple enough!
