It happened Friday at 6380 Quinpool Road, the building was brought down and is now fenced off for safety reasons.
The blaze produced toxic smoke, the HRM asked people to steer clear of the area.
On Friday, District Chief Brad Connors told our newsroom the fire spread into the walls.
“The fire got in the walls and up into the attic, which is hard for us to fight, unless we can get the walls and stuff torn apart early,” he said.
At about midnight, smoke alarms went off at the mixed-use building, and firefighters headed to the scene, according to a Facebook post from the Halifax Professional Firefighters Union.
Some members from Station 2 in the South End found a working fire and started trying to put it out, the post read. They upgraded to a second alarm to bring in more resources, which lead to 35 firefighters responding to the fire throughout the night, the union said.
Connors said everyone inside was evacuated and no one was hurt.
