As we are approaching the one-year anniversary this Sunday and Monday of the events that rocked our province and our country, Nova Scotia Premier Iain Rankin is inviting people here in the province to participate in two minutes of silence this Sunday at 3 p.m. for those lost in last year’s mass shooting, as we unite in honouring and remembering the Nova Scotians who were killed on April 18th and 19th, 2020.
Flags at the legislature downtown will be lowered to half-mast from sunrise on Saturday to sunset on Sunday, and the building will be lit in blue. A lone piper will play on the grounds of the legislature as the flags are lowered, and flags at all provincial government buildings and institutions will also be at half-mast.
Businesses, community organizations and residents that fly flags are being encouraged by the province to lower them to half-mast for this Sunday and Monday.
The province is suggesting residents to consider putting a Nova Scotia flag in their windows as a way of remembering those lost.
Various memorial events taking place this weekend were created from a desire to show support for the families and others harmed by the mass shooting. Family members of victims are expected to gather in a Truro church on Sunday.
There will be runners taking part in a marathon that will start in Portapique. Funds raised from the run will go towards a permanent memorial. The group has also helped organize a commemorative walk in Victoria Park in Truro.
Sunday afternoon at 3 Hot Country 1035, we will have our special programming to remember our fellow Nova Scotians we lost one year ago as we are still Nova Scotia Strong.
