This is where you can learn about ‘totally random things’ and or get lost in thought….
Today on Hot Country mornings with Jody & Melody we talked about….
Jody told us The T-shirt was invented in 1904 and marketed toward bachelors who didn’t know how to sew and replace buttons.
And of course Melody did some digging and well, cleared things up on ‘T-shirts’ with some facts.
According to Snopes:
The Cooper Underwear Co., now known as Jockey International, did market T-shirts to bachelors as items that did not need regular maintenance requiring sewing skills.
T-shirts were not invented in 1904. Rather, versions of the garment — typically worn as underwear — already existed in the 19th century.
A New York Times Magazine article said the Cooper Underwear Co. popularized, but did not invent, T-shirts, mentioning a 1904 advertisement. The company does not take credit for inventing the T-shirt but agrees with New York Times Magazine’s assessment of its role in the T-shirt’s history.
On to ice-cream sundae’s….
ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (July 8)
144 years ago – In 1881, druggist Edward Berner of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, invented the Ice Cream Sundae.
A customer asked him to top a dish of ice cream with chocolate sauce, the sauce previously only used for flavoured sodas, which were ILLEGAL to serve on Sundays. So Berner sold his ice cream concoction on the Sabbath and called it a “sundae”.
A 10-year-old girl, who insisted on having a dish of ice cream “with that stuff on top” on a different day of the week. That was out of the question for Berner—until the girl charmingly suggested that they “pretend it was Sunday.” That opened the floodgates, with the shopkeeper offering the dish every day in many flavours.
The unusual spelling of “sundae” started when a salesman placed an order for Berner’s canoe-shaped dishes with his glassware company. He requested “sundae dishes” with an “e” at the end rather than a “y,”….there is more to this story, as there’s a place in New York who challenged that they are the true founders of the “sundae”…. for us, we’re just happy sundae’s were invented!
And finally, on to ‘Bare knuckle’ boxing…
Back in the day, 136 years ago – In 1889, the last Bare-Knuckle world heavyweight boxing championship was fought. John L. Sullivan retained his title in a 75 round match in Richburg, Mississippi, against Jake Kilrain. Bare-knuckle fighting was banned to cut down on broken hands….Ouch!
