Premier Iain Rankin says schools are safe and in-person learning will resume in Halifax and Sydney on Thursday, June 3.
Rankin announced last week that only schools outside Halifax and Sydney would reopen but after consulting with health professionals on epidemiology, the decision was made to open all schools in the province.
There will be no online learning in HRM over the next two days to allow teachers prep time to return to class.
“Thanks to the continued hard work of all Nova Scotians, our new case count is dropping, and all schools can now safely reopen,” said Derek Mombourquette, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. “I want to thank parents, teachers and students for being flexible and for working hard all year to keep schools safe. I’m glad all our students can finish this year in class.”
Schools, regional centres for education and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial will provide more information to families.
There are now under 500 active cases of the virus in the province.
“Everything is trending in the right direction – cases, testing and vaccine. Given how quickly things are improving, it’s safe for children to be back in the classroom where they belong,” said Dr. Robert Strang, Nova Scotia’s chief medical officer of health. “The in-school experience is vital to a young person’s development and well-being. I’m very happy children will be able to finish out the year with their friends and classmates.”
