After almost a decade without, Dalhousie is getting a new arena.
The university tore down the former Memorial Arena in 2012.
The Board of Governors gave their stamp of approval for the new Dalhousie Event Centre Tuesday.
The arena, to be built on the site of the former rink, will be home to an NHL-sized ice sheet with an alternate floor surface, the Dalhousie Physiotherapy Clinic, and event spaces.
Tim Maloney, executive director of Athletics & Recreation at Dalhousie, says the new facility will have a lasting impact on the campus.
“The Dalhousie Event Centre will be a home for Tigers of all stripes and the addition of a multi-use facility will offer significant potential.”
Officials say, without an arena, Dalhousie’s ice-related athletics and recreation activities have been based out the Halifax Forum.
They say there’s been significant decline in program participation, but they expect a major boost from the new facility.
It’s set to open in fall 2023.
